Chive Herb


Best started in your home garden from transplants although seeds have pretty good germination rates it is a bit time consuming. You generally need only a single chive plant or two for a family garden and if you also plant onion bulbs you will be fully covered in the onion category. Chives will over winter (perennial) and can be a space saving alternative in a small garden where full onions do not have the room to grow. Keep them cut back to encourage continuous growth. Mature chive clumps should be divided every 3 to 4 years.

Health benefits of chives (and most allium plants): You may not eat a lot of chives at one sitting, but they can have a positive cumulative effect on your health. Alliums contain folate and sulfur which have shown positive outcomes in fighting effects of cancer. In addition chive contain good levels of cholines, which linked to better cognitive function.
